Preparing for a Total Hip Revision

The success of a revision total hip arthroplasty can hinge on how well the orthopaedic surgeon has planned ahead for the procedure. Critical issues in preoperative planning include:

    • Establishing the etiology of the failure
    • Performing a detailed physical exam and radiographic analysis
    • Determining the surgical approach
    • Assessing the need to remove the components and, if necessary, deciding how the components will be removed
    • Determining the reconstruction method

Recently, ICJR spoke with R. Michael Meneghini, MD, from Indiana University Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana, about how he prepares for a total hip revision. Click the image above to hear his comments.
