ICJR Interviews: Is There a Benefit to Routine Postop Lab Tests?

A recent study reports that routine postoperative laboratory tests are a waste of time and resources for most patients who undergo primary anatomic or reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

Surena Namdari, MD, MSc, and his colleagues from The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, found that only about 15% of their patients required clinical intervention as a result of these lab tests – even though 100% of their patients were tested.

Their study – “Postoperative Chemistry Labs are Unnecessary for the Majority of Primary Shoulder Arthroplasty Patients” (Paper 656) – was presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Orlando.
