ICJR Interviews: Is Patellar Instability an Issue after Kinematically Aligned TKA?
In a kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the femoral components are placed in slightly more valgus alignment, more flexion, and less external rotation than mechanically aligned TKA.
Theoretically, that could put the patient at risk for patellar instability.
Fortunately, patellar instability is relatively rare, according to a study presented by Alexander J. Nedopil, MD, and his colleagues from UC Davis in Sacramento, California, at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Orlando.
Of their more than 3,000 patients who underwent a kinematically aligned TKA over the past 9 years, only 13 patients presented with patellar instability following the procedure.
