Converting from ORIF to THA with the Direct Anterior Approach

The direct anterior approach is appropriate for converting to a total hip arthroplasty (THA) from a prior hip surgery, such as open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of a hip fracture, says John M. Keggi, MD, from Orthopaedics New England, Middlebury, Connecticut.

He cautions surgeons to think of a conversion procedure as a revision procedure and be prepared – a conversion can be tricky, and should be done by surgeons with experience in the direct anterior approach.
